Your New Year’s Resolution this year was to cut out sweets from your diet to lose weight. You’ve been really good, you say no to the dessert after your meal, you cut out the excess candy and Little Debbie cakes, but when you get on the scale one month later, your weight hasn’t changed at all and you are left feeling deprived of sweets. Ugh, losing weight is IMPOSSIBLE!
Well, that last statement isn’t entirely true. Remember the three rolls you had with extra butter on them before dinner the other night? How about the two glasses of your favorite wine you have every night? And don’t forget about the fast food you get every day for lunch.
Our bodies are smart, like really smart. They take what we feed them and turn that food into calories. Our bodies can turn any food into calories, including carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and alcohol.
Calories are great, they help give us energy to do day-to-day activities, but excess calories are what leads to weight gain, and our bodies don’t really care where the excess calories come from. (Excess calories are when we consume more calories than we burn).
Don’t get me wrong, reducing added sugar is great! But the other things we eat are just as important. Did you know that our bodies turn carbohydrates (like bread and pasta) into sugar? So, even though you didn’t eat the cookie after dinner, eating that extra dinner roll before dinner is about the same equivalent.
So, what am I trying to say? What I am trying to tell you is that sugar is not the enemy when it comes to weight loss, at least not in small amounts. Neither are carbs, fat, protein, or alcohol!
The truth is that you can fit any food (or beverage) that you love into a balanced diet, and still lose weight! So, you don’t have to say goodbye to your favorite sweets forever (Thank Goodness!).
The key is moderation. Follow serving size suggestions on the food labels, stop eating when you begin to feel full, fill up on whole foods first, and make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Doing these simple things will lead to weight loss, without having to cut any of your favorite foods out completely!
