Hello, my name is Alison Griffith, a Registered Dietitian based in Missouri. On top of being a new mom, I also work full time as an inpatient and outpatient Dietitian at one of my local hospitals and am very passionate about what I do. My favorite part of my job is helping others find foods that they love while also helping them achieve their health goals. I’ve helped elderly patients find enjoyment in what ended up being one of their last meals, I’ve helped newly diagnosed Diabetics navigate through what seems like a scary change, I’ve helped moms discover the joy in cooking for themselves and their families again, and so many more people with success stories. I want to reach and help more people, which is why I’ve started my own Private Practice!
A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a highly trained healthcare professional specializing in nutrition and dietetics. They have completed at least a bachelor’s degree in nutrition or a related field (I went on to complete my Master’s Degree), followed by an accredited internship program and passed a national examination to become registered. RDs are also required to maintain their registration through continuing education.
The primary role of a Registered Dietitian is to provide evidence-based nutrition counseling and guidance to individuals, communities, and organizations. They assess their clients’ nutritional needs, develop personalized plans, and educate them on making healthy food choices. RDs consider factors such as medical conditions, dietary restrictions, and personal preferences to create individualized nutrition plans.
Registered Dietitians work in various settings, including hospitals, clinics, schools, sports facilities, private practice, and community health centers just to name a few. They collaborate with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to patients. RDs also play a crucial role in food service management, ensuring that meals provided in healthcare facilities meet the nutritional requirements of patients.
Who should see a Dietitian? Anyone can benefit from the expertise of a Registered Dietitian. They can help individuals manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and gastrointestinal disorders. RDs also assist with weight management, sports nutrition, and prenatal nutrition. Additionally, those seeking guidance on general healthy eating habits or those with specific dietary concerns can seek the help of a Dietitian.
Seeing a Registered Dietitian can be especially beneficial for those who have tried various diets or nutritional approaches without success. They can provide evidence-based recommendations and support to help individuals achieve their health and wellness goals.
In conclusion, Registered Dietitians are highly trained professionals who specialize in nutrition and dietetics. They provide personalized nutrition counseling and guidance to individuals with various health concerns or those seeking to improve their overall well-being. If you are looking for expert advice on nutrition and healthy eating, consulting a Registered Dietitian can be a valuable step towards achieving your goals.
